after your peel…

In the first two days, your skin might feel a bit tight as the peeling process prepares to begin. Think of it like a sunburn—avoid sun exposure, sweating, and heat during this time.

While your skin is actively peeling, it’s crucial to stay out of the sun. Even after peeling stops, your newly exposed skin will be more sensitive to UV light. Protect your results by applying and reapplying sunscreen whenever you’re outdoors.

The extent of visible peeling varies from person to person. Your skin will shed as much as it needs to. Do not pick at your skin! If you notice loose, peeling skin that ‘needs a little help’, you can gently trim it with clean scissors.

day one

  • Don’t wash, touch, or apply anything (like makeup or sunscreen) to your skin for 4–6 hours while the peel is working. Leave it alone for now!

  • If your skin gets super itchy or irritated during this time, you can gently wash with a mild cleanser and water—just use your hands, no sponges or washcloths. You can also take Benadryl if needed.

  • After 4–6 hours, go ahead and wash your skin with a mild cleanser (we can recommend one if you need it). Make sure your skin is completely dry, then use the first post-peel retinoid towelette. Let it soak in before bed (try to apply at least 1 hour before sleeping).

day two

Morning:

  • Wash your face gently with a mild cleanser. You can now apply sunscreen and makeup—just make sure to protect your skin from the sun.

Evening:

  • Wash your face again with a mild cleanser (hands only) and make sure it’s completely dry.

  • Use the second post-peel retinoid towelette at least an hour before bed so it has time to absorb.

  • If your skin feels dry or uncomfortable, apply a light moisturizer or a small amount of hydrocortisone cream (1% or 2.5%). Benadryl can help if you’re feeling extra itchy.

days three to five

Morning:

  • Cleanse your face with a mild cleanser, then apply moisturizer (if needed) and sunscreen before putting on makeup. You can also use hydrocortisone cream if your skin is itchy or irritated.

Evening:

  • Wash your face with a mild cleanser, then apply moisturizer (use the one we recommend). Hydrocortisone cream is fine to use as needed.

Peeling will start around your mouth and move to other areas. It’s totally normal to feel itchy as your skin starts to peel—this is part of the healing process! Hydrocortisone cream can help with the itchiness.

If your skin is peeling a lot, use the VI Derm moisturizer to stay comfortable and reduce visible flaking. Whatever you do, don’t pick at your peeling skin—this can cause redness, irritation, or even dark spots. If the peeling skin is bothering you, you can carefully trim it with clean scissors.
